Fox Valley Technical College Students Win First Place in Statewide Culinary Competition
The culinary team from Fox Valley Technical College was awarded first place in the Hot Food Competition of the 2010 College Student Culinary Arts Competition held this March at the Wisconsin Restaurant Expo in Milwaukee. The winning Fox Valley Technical College team consisted of Robert Rupp, Don Ruechel, Tim Vallery, Jr. and Cody Vatland.
The College Student Culinary Arts Competition consists of two unique competitions for students, the Hot Food Competition and the Cold Plate Competition. Both portions of the competition are held by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation to give students the opportunity to exercise their culinary skills and showcase their talents.
Second place in the competition was awarded to Blackhawk Technical College. The team consisted of Robert Phelps, Corey Kilbreath, Jim Bade, Rebecca Riese and alternate Kristina Starnes. The Milwaukee Area Technical College team took third place. Team members included Steven Wallendal, Andrew Squire, Adam Gonia, Cat Mayhew and alternate Josh Unser.
Using beef and veal as the meat for their entrée, students designed and presented beautifully plated meals that were judged by experienced chefs from around Wisconsin. Judges used a 100-point scale to evaluate each plate and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to the top-ranking entries. Medals and cash prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place competitors.
Gordon Food Service, the Wisconsin Beef Council and the Veal Committee of the Wisconsin Beef Council sponsored this year’s College Student Culinary Arts Competition.
