Fox Valley Technical College students excelled at the 2005 College Student Culinary Arts Competition held this March in Milwaukee. Paul Sattler won a gold medal and second place in the competition. Perry Brumm and Deng Zhenting won silver medals. The College Student Culinary Arts Competition is held by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation to give students the opportunity to hone their culinary skills and showcase their talents. “Fox Valley had an impressive showing at the competition,” said Susan Quam, Senior Director of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation. “The professionalism and culinary skills displayed by these students shows that the school has a strong program.” Approximately 36 students from eight Wisconsin technical colleges participated in the event, which is part of the Wisconsin Restaurant Expo, Wisconsin’s largest foodservice industry trade show. Overall, the judges awarded eight bronze medals, 21 silver medals and seven gold medals. Cash prizes were also given to the first, second and third place competitors. Using veal as their entrée, students designed and presented beautifully plated meals that were judged by experienced chefs from around Wisconsin. Judges used a 100-point scale to evaluate each plate and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to the top-ranking entries. The Veal Committee of the Wisconsin Beef Council sponsored this year’s College Student Culinary Arts Competition.
