Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) students excelled at the 2005 College Student Culinary Arts Competition held this March in Milwaukee. Junior Ritchie won first place in the competition and John Tucker took third. Overall the team took home three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The College Student Culinary Arts competition is held by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation to give students the opportunity to hone their culinary skills and showcase their talents. “MATC had an impressive showing at the competition,” said Susan Quam, Senior Director of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation. “The professionalism and culinary skills displayed by these students shows that the school has a strong program.” Gold medal winners included Junior Ritchie, John Tucker and Anne Leonhardt. Using veal as their entrée, students designed and presented beautifully plated meals that were judged by experienced chefs from around Wisconsin. Judges used a 100-point scale to evaluate each plate and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to the top-ranking entries. The Veal Committee of the Wisconsin Beef Council sponsored this year’s College Student Culinary Arts Competition.
