I-9 Form News: Continue using current Form I-9 even though expiration date has passed
The revised Form I-9 that was originally supposed to go into effect on February 2, 2009 but was delayed for further consideration by the Department of Homeland Security is still the correct version to use. Disregard the expiration date of June 30, 2009 and make sure the revision date on lower right hand corner of the form reads 02/02/09. No previous editions accepted. You should have been using it with new hires starting April 3. The form's purpose is to document that new employees are authorized to work in the United States and to verify their identity.
The most significant changes to this version of the Form I-9 are:
Employers can no longer accept expired documents during the I-9 verification process.
The list of acceptable identity documents has been narrowed.
